New Report Shows Stimulus Plan Job Prediction Almost 70 Thousand Jobs Off The Mark in South Carolina
Friday, December 18, 2009
CHARLESTON, SC - A newly released report from the House Republican Ways and Means Committee staff shows that President Obama and Speaker Pelosi's so-called stimulus plan actually resulted in more lost jobs for South Carolina.
"I said all along that the stimulus plan was going to be a failure," said Carroll Campbell. "Anytime pork-spending politicians choose government spending over tax cuts, bad things happen."
The White House prediction of South Carolina job creation from the stimulus plan is nowhere near the actual job numbers provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The report shows that Obama predicted a gain of 50,000 jobs in South Carolina. However, since the stimulus plan's passage, South Carolina has lost close to 19,000 jobs.
In February, before declaring for Congress, Carroll Campbell authored an Op-Ed (available here: http://tinyurl.com/byxhe9) outlining his opposition to the stimulus plan due to concerns with the total amount of wasteful federal government spending.
"It was obvious in February the Democratic stimulus package would not stimulate the economy, but further stagnate the status quo. The very nature of the good ol' boy reward system contradicts free market principles and the ideals of the American Dream. Unfortunately for all people in South Carolina still looking for work, my worst fears became true."
"We need a change in leadership. We need ideas to stimulate economic growth. We need new leaders who can put a stop to bad ideas like these stimulus plans. We can't afford to have those in Congress saying no to some wasteful spending but then porking-up other legislation. We need true fiscal responsibility," said Campbell.
