David Beasley Offers His Endorsement and Support to Carroll Campbell in Race for Congress
Governor Beasley notes South Carolina needs to send someone with business experience to Congress
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Standing in the shadow of a hotel his grandfather used to operate, Carroll Campbell today accepted the support of former Governor David Beasley.
Governor Beasley gave the following remarks:
"I am very glad to be here today, standing with Carroll Campbell.
I can tell you that this Carroll Campbell shares many of the same traits of past men who have had that name. He is tough, he is determined to make our nation better, and he has a small business background our state and nation needs.
In fact, we are standing in front of a building once occupied by another small businessman and job creator named Carroll Campbell - Carroll Campbell senior - we occupy the space of his grandfather’s former hotel which he operated right here in Myrtle Beach on the Grand Strand. As someone who has worked with private industry for many years, I know that creating jobs is our number one issue right now here in South Carolina. We need people in government who come from a business background – people who know how to create jobs.
If you have a leaky sink, you hire a plumber. We have a jobs problem and we need to hire a job creator. It is for that reason and others that I stand here to offer my support for Carroll Campbell in the race for Congress.
In my runs for political office Horry County has been good to me, I have received a tremendous amount of support here, including in my last primary election. I know that tourism is critical to this region. When he was a young man, Carroll Campbell spent time at this hotel – the grandson of a man who made his living in the tourism industry. Carroll has been a restaurateur – like many here in Myrtle Beach. With his Wendy’s businesses employing hundreds including many from near here – Carroll Campbell has proven he knows how to create jobs and he understands tourism. He has it in his blood. It is part of his legacy of leadership.
Carroll Campbell is a strong conservative. He is Pro-Life and he will fight for the things many of us hold dear. He opposes wasteful spending and high taxes. He supports our men and women in uniform. While I am sure Carroll and I won’t agree on every issue, I know that he will fight for our area and against liberal Nancy Pelosi in Congress.
Now more than ever we need people who come from a business background, who are conservative first and are political second. I have been on both sides, more politicians is not what we need – we need some business experience in Washington. This campaign is not a stepping stone for Carroll – he has had a business career. He has signed paychecks. He is not looking for a government job. So once again I am proud to be here to support Carroll and I turn the podium over the Carroll."
Carroll Campbell thanked Governor Beasley and offered these remarks:
"I am happy to be here in gorgeous Myrtle Beach today. This is a place that all Americans should visit and I look forward to sending that message to my colleagues when I am on Capitol Hill! It is also interesting to be standing right here.
Many years ago as I spent time with my Grandfather – the original Carroll Campbell – as he plied his trade of managing hotel properties right here in Myrtle Beach. I look forward to using the things I learned from my business minded grandfather, my knowledge of the tourism industry and of the restaurant industry from my years of owning Wendy’s franchises to go to work and create jobs here in South Carolina.
It was another Governor of this great state – Carroll Campbell, Jr. – who taught me and all South Carolinians that we could create jobs with business-government partnerships that reduced the stranglehold of government regulations while giving a helping hand.
Now we must fight for new jobs again and to do so we don’t need more politicians in Washington, just as Governor Beasley said, we need small business entrepreneurs. That is what I have spent my life doing, creating jobs and working for business growth, and that is what I will do as our new Congressman.
You know Governor Beasley always stood for conservative principles. We haven’t agreed on everything – no one can. But his stands and support of this area is why Horry County and especially Horry County local Republican voters stood by him. I look forward to taking my conservative principles to Washington and to fight for what we believe in.
Governor Beasley told me that it is frustrating watching what is happening in Washington. I agree. If we are going to stop Nancy Pelosi and a slide toward more and more government in this country – we can’t send people to Washington who are invested in receiving a government paycheck or in just climbing the political ladder – we need to fight for small business principles of limited spending and smart growth.
That is what I will do as the next Congressman and why I am pleased and honored to stand here with Governor Beasley and to have his support today."
Carroll Campbell is a businessman who has employed over 500 people across South Carolina’s First District. He served as Treasurer and Secretary of the South Carolina State Ports Authority's Board of Directors. Serving on past and current Boards of Directors for the South Carolina Economic Development Association, the University of South Carolina's Board of Visitors, the Newberry College Board of Trustees, the Richland Memorial Hospital Center for Cancer Treatment, Ducks Unlimited, and as Past Chairman of the Palmetto Alzheimer's Association; Carroll Campbell has been a leader in the state of South Carolina.
